IC-814 flight hijacking had ISI backing: Doval

Had it not for the ISI support to Taliban hijackers, five of them who took over Kathmandu-Delhi flight IC-814 soon after take-off on December 24, 1999, the crisis could have resolved, national security advisor Ajit Doval has said as part of a book by former India Reuters chief Myra Macdonald.
Interestingly, Doval was among those tasked as negotiator to defuse the crisis. The crisis finally ended with the release of dreaded terrorists Maulana Masood Azhar, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and Mushtaq Zargar.
“There were a lot of Taliban on the tarmac with their weapons,” Doval has stated in the book. The negotiating team made another discovery when they landed.
There were many ISI men. While the two were on the tarmac, others soon joined them. One of them already on tarmac was a lieutenant colonel and the other a major rank officer, Doval, who has served for several years in Pakistan has stated in the book.
What came as shock was the fact that the hijackers were directly communicating with the ISI officers in Kandahar, Doval has further said.
