Read how a truck driver killed seven Hindu pilgrims in Ayodhya

Seven Hindu pilgrims, who had gone to see the monsoon fair in Ayodhya from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, were allegedly run over by a driver of a speeding truck early Tuesday while on their visit to the holy city.
Besides the seven who died on the spot in the tragic road accident, dozen others of the group sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, officials said. The group, which includes men , women and children, was sleeping on a nearby pavement when the accident took place.
According to Faizabad SSP Mohit Gupta, the deceased Hindu pilgrims and the ones who had sustained serious injuries were residents of Kanpur’s Shanigaavan Kanshiram area and had arrived in Ayodhya late Monday to attend the ongoing Saavan mela (monsoon fair), held in the city every year.
As the group arrived in the city late at night, its members decided to sleep on the pavement of Gorakhpur-Lucknow Highway near Ayodhya’s Balughat police station, the SSP said. He added that early Tuesday, when the group members were deep asleep, a speeding truck coming from Gorakhpur’s direction, ran over them and its driver fled from the scene.
In the incident, seven people were killed on the spot and dozen others were seriously injured, the SSP further said. The pilgrims who were killed in Tuesday’s accident include Bhagwan Prasad, Uma Shankar, baby Gudia, Kishori Mishra and an unidentified man, according to Gupta.
The police officials rushed to the spot as they received information about accident on the highway and immediately took all the injured pilgrims to a nearby hospital for first aid, the SSP said. The people who had attained serious injuries were referred to the trauma centre in Lucknow, he added.
