1) The Satia tribe of Banjaras in Rajasthan mourns birth of a child and celebrates when someone dies in the family. The tribe believes that life of Satia is god’s curse and a death is celebrated as the person is free of the curse after his/her death.Similarly,they say that it is due to the god’s curse that a child is born in the human cunt.This is the reason that they mourn birth of a child.
2) They celebrate when someone dies in the tribe.They wear new clothes,buy sweets and alcohol. The dead body is taken to crematorium in a procession of dancing and twisting groups of near and dears on the tune of drums. After the funeral pyre is lit, members from the tribe arrange a feast, consume locally brewed liquor and dance with vigour until the body is completely reduced to ashes.
3) It becomes an event of mourning and grief with the new born receiving curses from everybody. The family of the baby does not even cook their daily meals at home on the birth day.
4) The Satia community comprising about 24 odd gypsy families scattered across the state and rely solely on disposing off the dead bodies of cattle from the roads.
5) Mostly illiterate, these tribes are notorious for their addiction to liquor. The men in the tribe are addicted to alcohol while the women are responsible for earning the money.
6) With their deep brown complexion and athletic physique, women of the tribe have been known to indulge in prostitution. While there are various girl child campaigns across the country,this is one tribe which prefers a girl over a boy child.
7) The gypsy tribe of Rajasthan is one of the nomad or vagabond communities in India. The origin of the tribe dates several centuries back. The people of this Rajasthani tribe belong to the lowest step of the socio-cultural and socio-economic ladder. They live a nomadic life and travel like a caravan from place to place.
8) With changing socio-cultural scenario, Satia men have become snake charmers and folk musicians while women have taken up folk dancing and singing in their attractive colorful attires, to earn their living.
9) Though the Satia tribe can be seen performing their folk talent extravagantly at Rajasthan festival they are still scared of mainstream people.
10) The government gave Satia nomads houses under various scheme but they sold it off to live on roadsides and a little away from the population.
